In 2025, Before and After School Programs (BASP) were closed in 4 schools in Huron County. This leaves one third of elementary schools across the Avon Maitland and Huron Perth Catcholic School Boards, and 50% of elementary schools in Huron County without BASP. These extended day programs can be operated by either a third party, or the school board themselves. There are several school boards in Ontario that run their own BASP including Waterloo Region, Waterloo Catholic, Halton and Ottawa-Carlton District School Boards. Our ask is that AMDSB and HPCDSB provide board operated programming where a third party is not avaialble.
On October 27 and 28th respectively, we presented two community petitions asking that the school boards:
1. Begin the licensing process with the Ministry of Education to
enable:
a. Board-operated BASP where no third-party provider is
available.
b. The Board to step in immediately if a third-party provider
ceases operations, ensuring uninterrupted service for students
and families.
2. Provide a proposed fee structure that would make a board operated
BASP financially viable.
3. Ensure the provision of BASP in all AMDSB where a third
party is not available.
To date, no further action has been taken by either school board on these requests. Coverage of the AMDSB meeting that took place on Oct 28, 2025 can be found here.
